Photographing reflective products without seeing yourself in them
A matte product reflects light diffusely, so it looks the same from most angles. A polished one acts like a mirror: what you see is not the object, it is the room. Photographing it well means controlling the room rather than the object.
This is why jewellery, watches, glassware, chrome fittings and foil packaging are consistently the hardest category, and why they are also the category where automatic tools fail most often.
The rule that explains all of it
A reflective surface shows you whatever is in front of it. So the question is never "how do I light this?" but "what do I want reflected in it?"
Once you think that way, every technique below is the same technique: put something large, white and evenly lit where the product can see it.
Five approaches, easiest first
1. A larger diffuser, closer. The commonest fix and often enough. A small light source reflects as a small bright dot; a large one reflects as a broad soft gradient. Moving a 60cm softbox from 1m to 40cm roughly doubles its apparent size, which is more effective than buying a bigger one.
2. White card on the open side. Anything the product can see that is not lit shows up as a dark patch. A sheet of A2 white card propped where the camera is not looking fills those in. Cost: about £2.
3. A light tent. A translucent cube with the product inside and lights outside. Every surface the product can see is a soft white panel. Excellent for jewellery and small chrome items, less good for anything that needs a directional highlight to read as shiny rather than flat.
4. Cross-polarisation. A polarising filter on the lens and polarising sheet over the lights, rotated to cancel. This removes specular reflection almost completely. Powerful and worth knowing about, but it costs you two to three stops of light and it can make a shiny product look oddly matte, you sometimes want some reflection, because that is what says "polished metal" rather than "grey plastic".
5. Shoot through a hole. For the worst cases: a sheet of white card with a lens-sized hole cut in it, between camera and product. The product sees white in every direction including towards the camera. Awkward, and it works when nothing else does.
Glass in particular
Glass is not reflective so much as transparent, which is a different problem: photographed on white, a clear bottle mostly disappears.
The standard solution is to light the background brightly and let the glass edges pick up a dark rim from the sides. A black card either side of the bottle, out of frame, gives the edges definition. It feels backwards, adding black to get a clean white shot, and it is the technique that makes glassware readable.
For anything with liquid in it, expect to shoot it twice and combine: once exposed for the glass, once for the contents.
Why automatic cutouts struggle here
Background removal works by deciding, for each pixel, whether it belongs to the product or the background. On a matte product that decision is usually easy. On a reflective one it is genuinely ambiguous, because the pixel is showing the background.
A chrome kettle photographed on white has large areas that are, quite correctly, white. They are reflections of the sweep. There is no signal distinguishing them from actual background, and any tool that removes them punches a hole through the product.
The same applies to glass, mesh, chain and anything with fine wire. This is not a limitation of one tool; it is inherent in the problem.
The practical consequence: for reflective products, check every cutout. PrepShot flags the ones it is unsure about, but the honest answer for a jewellery seller is that this category needs a human eye more than any other, and it is worth budgeting time for that rather than being surprised by it.
A shortcut worth knowing
If your product is reflective and your background work is difficult, consider shooting it on a light grey sweep rather than white.
Grey gives the edges something to contrast against, so the cutout is far more reliable, and replacing a known uniform grey with pure white afterwards is trivial. You lose the ability to use the photograph unedited, which for a reflective product you were unlikely to do anyway.
What to expect
A matte product photographed adequately takes a couple of minutes. A polished silver bracelet photographed well takes twenty, and the first three attempts will have you in them somewhere.
Budget accordingly, shoot the difficult category in one session while the setup is right, and do not schedule it for the afternoon before a launch.
