How many pixels does a product photo actually need?
Every marketplace publishes image requirements, and every one of them publishes at least two numbers that get confused with each other: a minimum below which the image is rejected, and a threshold above which something good happens.
Mixing those up is why sellers end up with listings that technically pass and look worse than their competitors'.
The two numbers
Amazon's main-image guidance is a good example. There is a minimum, below which the upload fails. There is also a longest-edge figure at which the zoom feature switches on, and zoom is the thing shoppers use to decide whether the stitching looks right.
An image can sit above the minimum, below the zoom threshold, and be published without complaint. It just quietly does not get the feature that sells the product.
What to shoot
Some practical guidance, separate from any specific platform's numbers, which change:
Shoot larger than you need, but not enormously larger. Downscaling is free and looks good. Upscaling never recovers detail, it invents it, and product photography is exactly where invented detail looks wrong: fabric weave turns to mush, printed text goes soft.
Beyond about 3000px on the longest edge, you are mostly buying file size. Marketplaces re-encode and resize anyway. The extra pixels are discarded by their pipeline, not yours.
Aspect ratio matters more than resolution for thumbnails. Most platforms crop to a square for grid views. A tall product photographed in a tall frame will be cropped, and the crop is automatic and unsentimental.
Where the pixels actually go
A useful way to think about it: a marketplace generates several derivatives from your upload.
- A grid thumbnail, often somewhere between 150 and 400 pixels. This is what most shoppers see first, and it is generated by downscaling your image heavily.
- A main product view, typically 500 to 1000 pixels on the page.
- A zoom view, which is where the extra resolution earns its keep, commonly the full uploaded size, or a capped version of it.
So resolution above the zoom threshold is discarded, resolution between the main view and zoom is used only by shoppers who zoom, and resolution below the main view makes the primary display soft.
The practical read: the zoom threshold is the number worth hitting, and going far beyond it buys little.
A worked example
Say you shoot on a 24-megapixel camera: roughly 6000 x 4000 pixels.
Crop to square for a marketplace main image and you have about 4000 x 4000, since the square is limited by the short side. That is comfortably above any current zoom threshold, so you can crop in considerably, down to about half the frame width, and still be fine.
On a 12-megapixel phone, roughly 4000 x 3000, the square crop gives you 3000 x 3000. Still ample. You can crop to about two thirds of the frame before you approach 2000 pixels.
This is why framing slightly loose and cropping afterwards costs nothing and protects you against clipping a corner.
Aspect ratio and the automatic crop
Resolution is the number people worry about; aspect ratio causes more actual problems.
Most platforms crop to a square for grid views, and some crop the first photo to other ratios for different placements. A tall product photographed tight in a tall frame will have its top and bottom cropped away in the grid, and the crop is automatic and unsentimental.
The fix is to photograph into the shape you will publish. If your main image is square, frame square in camera. Padding a tall photograph into a square afterwards works, but you will have shot the product smaller in frame than you needed to.
Never upscale to meet a minimum
This is the one rule worth being absolute about. If a photograph is below a platform's minimum, enlarging it to pass is the wrong move. You get a soft image that passes a check and loses the sale to a sharper competitor.
Reshoot it, or leave it out. A good tool should refuse to upscale by default and tell you which images it skipped, rather than silently blowing them up to make the numbers work.
Requirements change
The specific figures in this post are deliberately vague, because platform requirements move. Amazon has changed its image guidance more than once. Etsy has changed its recommended sizes. Any article that confidently lists exact pixel dimensions is accurate on the day it was written and decaying from then on.
That is not a reason to avoid writing them down. It is a reason to write down when you checked.
Our own presets carry the date they were last verified against each platform's own documentation, and a note on what was checked and how confident we were, because a preset that says "Amazon" and carries no date is a value someone assumed was still right.
